Fishers Facing Pressure from Wildlife

The recovery of the fisher, a charismatic, long-tailed forest carnivore, will likely be hindered by the increasing frequency and intensity of future wildfires, new research by Oregon State University indicates. A long-term monitoring program along the Oregon-California border showed that fisher abundance declined following three mixed-severity wildfires and that salvage logging also affected fisher populations negatively, said David Green of the OSU Institute for Natural Resources. Lite on the Land started with just a skid steer and attachments doing fire-clearing and hazard-reduction projects in California. Since then, it has grown into a full-fledged logging operation. The goal is simple – to leave as little disturbance as possible in the California forests. Their 30 crews run John Deere Forestry Machines that include: an 895M Tracked Feller Buncher, 848L Skidder, 2654G Processor, and 2656G Log Loader.
