Treating A Sick Tiger

After diagnostic testing at Oregon State University’s veterinary hospital, 6-year old Amur tiger Bernadette from the Oregon Zoo is back to her healthy, playful self, zoo staff say.
At OSU, she received an MRI to scan for brain abnormalities, along with an ultrasound of her abdomen and a spinal tap to check for other potential areas of concern.

How Virtual Fencing Can Help Cattle Fight Wildfires

The use of virtual fencing to contain cattle on sagebrush rangelands has the potential to create fuel breaks needed to help fight wildfires in that ecosystem, a recent Oregon State University and USDA-Agricultural Research Service study found.

BROTHERS OF THE CENTURY

Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity honored 718 of its members as "Brothers of The Century" during their 58th annual National Convention and celebration of 100 years as a Fraternity. The convention was held August 15-18, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio.

Columbus was selected for the convention site because of Alpha Gamma Rho's history of the Fraternity's foundation there 100 years ago. Approximately 800 AGR alumni and collegiate members and their families attended the convention. Alpha Gamma Rho is the national professional/social agricultural fraternity and at the time had more than 59,000 members nationwide and chapters on 65 campuses in the United States.

The purpose of the Alpha Gamma Rho Brothers of the Century award was to recognize the "best of the best" members of AGR in our Fraternity's first 100 years.

The brothers selected are known for the highest principles, values and ideals of brotherhood of Alpha Gamma Rho. And most importantly, the honorees are recognized within their career fields and communities as role models for young men.

Each recipient received a commemorative Brother of the Century medallion and was invited to attend the 2004 convention and be recognized in a special ceremony and celebration of AGR's 100th birthday at the convention.

The Brother of the Century committee determined that no more than two percent of our Fraternity's 59,000 initiates would be awarded the distinction of Brothers of the Century. The committee also determined that brothers could be nominated in one of two categories; service to Alpha Gamma Rho or service to agriculture.

Alpha Gamma Rho began its second century with growing momentum and confident expectations that the best is yet to come. These brothers will be remembered and honored as the "best of the best."

Smoke On the Vineyard

Oregon State researchers have discovered a new class of sulfur-containing compounds, thiophenols, that contribute to the smoky flavors in wine exposed to wildfire smoke. This development is significant for wine makers who have struggled to combat the impact of smoke on grapes. The researchers' findings provide new avenues for research to understand and prevent smoke taint in grapes, and help provide tools for the grape and wine industries to quickly make decisions about whether to harvest grapes or make wine following a smoke event.
