America's Great Lost Tree Is Finally Returning

Once towering over eastern U.S. forests, billions of American chestnut trees nourished ecosystems, built homes, and sustained Appalachian communities. But in the early 1900s, a foreign fungus arrived, and within decades, nearly all of them were gone.

However, the species never fully vanished. Its roots still survive underground, sending up sprouts that grow, die, and regrow in an endless cycle. These trees are biologically alive, but with most never reaching maturity, they remain functionally extinct.

In the forests of Pennsylvania, Shane Campbell-Staton joins Sara Fern Fitzsimmons from The American Chestnut Foundation to track this tree’s strange afterlife and learn the science behind its potential revival. With the help of rare surviving trees, selective breeding, and even gene editing, scientists and volunteers are working to breed blight-resistant trees.

The chestnut’s comeback will take time. But researchers are making steady progress towards developing American chestnut trees that survive and thrive in the native range they formerly dominated.

New Lemur Discovery

The explosion of new lemur species that began when the first of those animals arrived on Madagascar more than 50 million years ago has not died down, according to scientists who’ve identified three different groups of lemurs with high speciation rates.

The research led by Katie Everson of Oregon State University provides evidence that lemurs continue to defy the evolutionary principle that says rapid species expansion is followed by a slowdown. Published in Nature Communications and funded by the National Science Foundation, the study sheds new light on a primate under extreme extinction pressure.

Alpha Gamma Rho: A Legacy of Leadership and Brotherhood

On April 4, 1908, the National Fraternity of Alpha Gamma Rho was born through the merger of two local fraternities: Alpha Gamma Rho, founded at The Ohio State University in 1904, and Delta Rho Sigma, established at the University of Illinois in 1906. Together, they created a fraternity that has grown far beyond its origins, with a commitment to excellence in every area of life.

As Brother Poston, a charter member from Ohio State, once said, “From the start, it was our ambition that the name Alpha Gamma Rho in every agricultural college would stand for all that is honorable and just.” This ambition continues to be the heart of Alpha Gamma Rho, as it has uplifted the social, academic, spiritual, and professional lives of thousands of young men.

Our chapter, Alpha Beta, started as Kai Tal and became part of the larger AGR family in 1924. In 1952, we moved into our current house on 331 NW 26th Street in Corvallis, a place that has seen many brothers grow, lead, and leave a lasting impact. Many areas of our house have been dedicated to individuals who have shaped our chapter, preserving their legacy for future generations.

Alpha Gamma Rho’s four pillars—recruitment, commitment, education, and recognition—serve as the foundation for everything we do. As past Grand President S.K. Bjoronson of North Dakota said, “I want her men to be leaders of the future, not because they are my Fraternity Brothers, but because I believe them to be the strongest of character and the most honorable and resolute of the times.” These pillars guide us, ensuring that every brother lives up to the ideals of leadership, integrity, and honor.

Being part of Alpha Gamma Rho means being part of something bigger—a brotherhood that stands for what’s right, pushes for excellence, and always strives to make the world a better place.
