Klamath Basin Research & Extension Center Overview

Klamath Basin Research & Extension Center (KBREC) Mission: A trusted resource for research and education working cooperatively with the communities of Klamath County resulting in healthy people, economies and environments.

Our Agricultural research focuses on practices that enhance sustainable production of agricultural crops and protection of soil and water resources.  Faculty at KBREC conduct research on nearly all field and forage crops grown in the Klamath Basin.

Identifying new and superior varieties of potatoes, small grains, and forages is conducted in cooperation with plant breeders and geneticists at OSU, USDA-ARS, and other cooperating universities throughout the United States.  Alternative forages are currently being evaluated to optimize performance under Klamath Basin climatic conditions.

In addition to variety development, researchers seek ways to improve efficiencies in areas such as: cultural management, integrated pest management, irrigation, and soil productivity.

Scrub-jays show their smarts

The California scrub-jay, a generally non-social bird, can learn just as well as another species of jay that lives in groups, a finding that surprised animal intelligence researchers who devised a novel food puzzle to study cognition in the wild. The research illustrates the complexity of the link between social behavior and the evolution of intelligence, say the scientists, who had expected the group-oriented Mexican jay to outperform the scrub-jay. The international collaboration that included Oregon State University’s Jonathon Valente was led by the University of California Santa Barbara’s Kelsey McCune when she was at the University of Washington. Findings were published in Nature Scientific Reports. Read more news and research here: https://today.oregonstate.edu/
