The Sound of Wild Ice | North Carolina, Naturally

Dr. Eleanor Spicer Rice, an entomologist and author of 10 books — each one about science and the natural world, views North Carolina through the lens of landscape, providing awe-inspiring explanations of our state’s creatures and creations while spotlighting the natural beauty along the way. In this episode, she explores wild ice and its cacophonous crack as it melts and breaks across our landscapes.

Alpha Gamma Rho: A Legacy of Leadership and Brotherhood

On April 4, 1908, the National Fraternity of Alpha Gamma Rho was born through the merger of two local fraternities: Alpha Gamma Rho, founded at The Ohio State University in 1904, and Delta Rho Sigma, established at the University of Illinois in 1906. Together, they created a fraternity that has grown far beyond its origins, with a commitment to excellence in every area of life.

As Brother Poston, a charter member from Ohio State, once said, “From the start, it was our ambition that the name Alpha Gamma Rho in every agricultural college would stand for all that is honorable and just.” This ambition continues to be the heart of Alpha Gamma Rho, as it has uplifted the social, academic, spiritual, and professional lives of thousands of young men.

Our chapter, Alpha Beta, started as Kai Tal and became part of the larger AGR family in 1924. In 1952, we moved into our current house on 331 NW 26th Street in Corvallis, a place that has seen many brothers grow, lead, and leave a lasting impact. Many areas of our house have been dedicated to individuals who have shaped our chapter, preserving their legacy for future generations.

Alpha Gamma Rho’s four pillars—recruitment, commitment, education, and recognition—serve as the foundation for everything we do. As past Grand President S.K. Bjoronson of North Dakota said, “I want her men to be leaders of the future, not because they are my Fraternity Brothers, but because I believe them to be the strongest of character and the most honorable and resolute of the times.” These pillars guide us, ensuring that every brother lives up to the ideals of leadership, integrity, and honor.

Being part of Alpha Gamma Rho means being part of something bigger—a brotherhood that stands for what’s right, pushes for excellence, and always strives to make the world a better place.
